For brushed DC motors, we know that graphite brushes are necessary for robust applications that may involve forward and reverse operation or higher current loads. Typically in such applications, the selected motor will also use ball bearings. In addition to being suitable for withstanding higher radial and axial loads, you will usually choose this bearing option for start-stop operations.
Like precious metal brushes, sintered sleeve bearings are suitable for continuous operation. This option is typically more cost-effective but is not suitable for higher loads, ambient temperatures below -20°C, or vacuum environments.
Additionally, the lifespan of brushless motors (EC) typically depends on the lifespan of the bearing system within them. All standard maxon EC motors are equipped with preloaded ball bearings. If the ball bearings are preloaded, additional axial load is applied to the bearings to reduce excessive clearance, which can lead to increased vibration and noise.
